FIFA rules that the Iranian women’s football team is effectively banned from competing in the 2012 Olympics because of the Islamic dress code. The team, pictured above, were banned by officials just minutes before the kick-off of a qualifier game against Jordan. Their uniforms, which are full body and include a headscarf in compliance with their religious beliefs and the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran. FIFA’s regulations for the 2012 Summer Olympics state that:
Players and officials shall not display political, religious, commercial or personal messages or slogans in any language or form on their playing or team kits.
The team had previously made alterations to the uniforms following an earlier FIFA ruling and had thought themselves in compliance. They were awarded a 3-0 forfeiture in the game against Jordan, making it unlikely that it will be able to continue on to the London games.
The head of the Iranian Football Federation (IFF), Ali Kaffashian, stated that the IFF plans to file a complaint to FIFA.
