“Rather than fighting for every woman’s right to feel beautiful, I would like to see the return of a kind of feminism that tells women and girls everywhere that maybe it’s all right not to be pretty and perfectly well behaved. That maybe women who are plain, or large, or old, or differently abled, or who simply don’t give a damn what they look like because they’re too busy saving the world or rearranging their sock drawer, have as much right to take up space as anyone else.

I think if we want to take care of the next generation of girls we should reassure them that power, strength and character are more important than beauty and always will be, and that even if they aren’t thin and pretty, they are still worthy of respect. Abstinence-only education is now illegal in Illinois. A bill passed two days ago by the state senate will require that schools with sex education classes include units on birth control. Schools can opt out of sex education altogether if they so desire (as they can now), and they’ll still have to teach that abstinence is the only absolute, surefire way to prevent pregnancy and STIs, but now they’ll have to provide information on contraceptives as well. The governor is expected to sign the bill. source

You know it’s tough to be a woman when the fucking GIRL SCOUTS is decried as a radical feminist organization.

I just saw this in a comment on co-ed scouting, “The two philosophies are incompatible. Boy Scouts teach Chivalry. Girl Scouts teach Feminism.” Now for most of us we’d take column B but I”m pretty sure this dude was implying that the BSA were doing it right and the GSA were doing it wrong.

I’d start a badass scouting organization that taught self-reliance and respect for others and admitted everyone regardless of gender identity if I didn’t generally hate being in the woods.

UPDATE: Apparently in most European countries they don’t maintain separate scouting organizations for boys and girls. So there’s that.
